Spotlight app

This project was developed during the course "Standards, Usability and Accessibility" of the Master in New Media and Web Practices.

The group consisted of me, Camila Albuquerque, Mycke Richard Guntijo and Weldson Medeiros.

The challenge we set ourselves was to build an app interface for a fact checking agency.

1. Contextualization

We did a desk research to understand more about the topic: benchmarking study, fake news articles and discussion forum.

After this step we performed a “Matriz CSD”  to determine what our certainties, assumptions and doubts at that moment. From this analysis the group could be well informed and we could outline a strategy.

2. Empathy

We talked to people interested in the app and university researchers about fake news. After that, we built 3 personas.

From the personas, we created user journeys. Thus, we were able to effectively define opportunities, motivations, uncertainties and barriers.

3. Idealization

We analyzed the outcome of the user journeys with the other data collected and adjusted the process to outline an action plan.

Thus, we developed a task flow focused on user journeys.

4. Prototyping  #1

We built a low-fidelity paper prototype to test with users to identify problems and barriers.

5. Usability Tests

We have ran usability tests with potential users. It was a great experience because we could identify barriers that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

For example, we identified a problem in the information hierarchy. The stamps categories aren’t as clarifying as we thought. The explanation of the stamps (true, doubtful, false) was only on a secondary page in the burger menu, but users had a hard time noticing.

6. Prototyping #2

After all this process, I created the high-fidelity prototype. I solved the issues that were identified by tweaking the information architecture among other tweaks. The objective was to create a simple and consistent design.

The issue mentioned in the usability test topic was solved by also putting the explanations of the categories in two more places: the home and the news pages when you mouse over the stamp category.
